Being an adviser isn’t just about providing financial advice to people. Sometimes you may also be required to be a relationship counselor, a mediator, or a friend. Other times you may need to explain medical terms to your clients. In the financial planning space, things are changing constantly so advisers attend trainings and talks regularly to provide the best service we can to our clients.
Beyond financial advice
An experienced adviser would have gone through basic medical training, to better understand what the different insurance policies cover for their clients. They would also have done their own research on all kinds of medical issues, as they help their clients make sense of the policy wording. It’s one thing to have an insurance plan, and another to know exactly what’s covered. Advisers have to keep on top of what’s happening in the health industry, along with advancements in medical technology or the pharmaceutical world.
“To an adviser, the financial planning industry can appear to be a pressure cooker, with high burn out rates. It is a huge responsibility to have entire families relying on you to help them with their finances in times of crisis. Every single case affects you personally. When things get real, you may be your client’s only hope. A good financial adviser always does their best to dot every i’s and cross every t’s in a policy application up front, and we make sure that we hold insurance providers accountable; so as to not let these families down.” Greg Hahn, Apex Adviser
Dealing with claims
The mark of a good adviser will be seen at claim time. It is especially hard to work on claims for children – one of our advisers had a case where the doctor did not disclose an existing health issue on a client’s child when he was a toddler. Our client left the clinic not knowing her child had a potential medical issue. Eventually, the baby needed surgery, and there was a long waiting list. Our client was a young mother who was under a lot of stress – losing nights of sleep over her unwell baby and worrying over paying for surgery or waiting in line for the public health system. One of our advisers worked with the insurer to get her claim paid, as it had not been the client’s fault that her child’s health issue was not reported.
We fight to get the best outcome for our clients
A lot of times, the lives of our clients have been changed, just by having the right policy in place. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have a policy that suits the needs of you and your family. In the past, a few bad apples have sullied the image of our industry with their questionable actions. However, at Apex, our advisers will always have your best interests at heart. We’re on your side, and we would fight for you every step of the way.
